Genre Meltdown: The Thai Pop Music Scene

There is a clear divide amongst those interested in east asian music-and that is, the Korean pop and Japanese pop fans. There are many into C-POP, and you can also find those into more than one of the genre's already listed, but you rarely ever find international fans of T-POP, thai pop.

To be quite honest with you, i can't blame people for ignoring the thai pop scene, and that is only because, not only are downloads for Thailands music incredibly difficult to find, but the few thai pop fans that exist are sharing the wrong realm of thai pop; the idol pop realm. Listen, this is not an opinion, this is simply fact: Thailands idol pop scene is absolutely atrocious. The music these groups put out could make you go deaf. Imagine an overproduced K-POP song (not difficult to imagine), now imagine that song, but recreated into something 10x more awful.

Yes, that is Thailands idol pop scene. Even Thailand knows it, their idol music is never on any airplay charts, because who the hell would want to listen to that? Especially when Thailand's pop/rock scene is where all the goods are at! Thailand has a great pop/rock scene, filled with amazing bands who compose and produce their own music, and it is these bands that top charts and are relevant. Well, them and Female soloists.

Now let's get to the point. I'm going to make life easy for all of you and list all the must listen to songs in T-POP. Most of these songs may be by the same person (Getsunova and Somkiat), but keep in mind i am also fairly new to the scene, and honestly Thailands music scene is very small, and well... Getsunova's discography is just too damn good. Below i will list the artist's name and include most, if not all, of the songs i like from them. I will also link a twitter thread here for those who want a quick listen of several of the songs i will list below!

Getsunova All i will say about this group is that if you don't give them a listen you are truly missing out on some quality music. Their song are just... SONGS!

Maybe the best song of 2016!

This may be my favourite song from them

Somkiat Okay, for Somkiat, literally their whole _SARA album is one to listen to. You can listen to the album in full here, all uploaded by there own company. It's just such a great cohesive pop/rock album. I wasn't feeling it too much when i first listened to it, but most of the tracks all grew on me and it's honestly one of the best albums of 2015. Here are some introductory Tracks to the group!

This is the definition of a pop/rock JAM!

Another JAM!

Polycat Polycat is a really cool band who's sound centers around 80's chill vibes. I need say no more!

This is their best song in my opinion. It's just soo catchy, Alright!

If alright didn't get you into them, this sure will!

Cocktail I would describe Cocktail as a generally soothing band with an amazing vocalist. Their song below stayed #1 for the longest time. It's one of my favorite thai ballads.

And here's a song that makes you feel inspirational and motivated!

Bedroom Audio Bedroom Audio had the potential to be the next Getsunova with their first amazing EP, featuring the song below which was also the theme song to an extremely popular (and highly recommended) drama series "Hormones" (yeah, that's what it's called). The song is also probably my favourite thai song of all time. I think i jammed to this song about 200 times.

Here's something more harder from them

Lula and lastly i will leave you with highly enchanting female soloist Lula. She's very popular in thailand and below is my favourite song from her!
